ABOUT THE CRAFT
Papier-mâché is a versatile craft technique used worldwide, including in India, where it has a rich history and is used to create a variety of decorative and functional items such as boxes, ornaments, and figurines. This craft is particularly prominent in regions like Kashmir, where it is known as "Papier-mâché."
Indian Papier-mâché typically begins with the pulping of paper mixed with adhesive substances like glue or starch to form a mouldable material. Artisans then shape this pulp over molds and builds the design up layer by layer to form these boxes.
Once dry, these objects are sanded smooth and hand-painted with intricate traditional Indian designs, often featuring floral motifs, animal figures, or detailed narrative scenes from Indian mythology.
The final products are usually vibrant and colourful, sometimes enhanced with gold leaf or lacquer to give them a glossy finish and added durability. These handcrafted items, especially decorative boxes, are popular both domestically and internationally, admired for their beauty and craftsmanship.
